On April 17th, wine lovers around the world celebrate World Malbec Day — a tribute to the grape that best embodies the soul of Argentine wine. But did you know Malbec was actually born in France?

From French Roots to Argentine Glory

Malbec originated in southwest France, particularly in the region of Cahors, where it’s still cultivated today. However, it was in Argentina that this grape found its ideal terroir to shine.

In 1853, Argentine President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento tasked French agronomist Michel Aimé Pouget with introducing new grape varieties to the country — including Malbec. Thanks to the unique conditions of Mendoza — intense sunlight, high altitudes, and wide temperature swings — Malbec flourished and became a symbol of Argentina’s winemaking identity.

Malbec Wine Characteristics

Malbec wines are known for their deep, dark colour and intense fruit-forward aromas that vary with the terroir. Typically, they show:

Aromas of plum, cherry, strawberry, raisins, and sometimes black pepper or fruit compote

Additional notes of coffee, vanilla, and chocolate when oak-aged

Smooth, silky tannins with a medium to full body

A persistent, well-balanced finish

Elegant yet powerful, Malbec gives rise to highly expressive wines with bold personalities. It’s the perfect red to pair with a wide range of dishes — from everyday meals to fine cuisine. It shines next to roasts, grilled meats, spicy foods, and aged cheeses.
