When Spring begins in the northern hemisphere, Autumn starts in the southern hemisphere and we are in the midst of the harvest season!

In countries like Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, South Africa, and Chile, among others, the harvest usually takes place between February and April, that is, between the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn south of the equator.

These wine regions have been gaining prominence among European wine enthusiasts, but still struggle with some prejudice among those who argue that wines produced north of the equator are of superior quality.

It is true that when we think of the major wine regions in the world, we immediately think of wines produced in countries located in the northern hemisphere such as France, Italy, Spain, or the United States.

And it is also true that a Bordeaux Merlot is completely different from a Merlot from South Africa. The Merlot grape tends to be more fruity in warmer climates and more tannic and earthy in cooler climates. The same grape varieties planted in different terroirs result in completely different wines. But isn’t that one of the magic of the art of making and drinking wine?

Wine production in countries in the southern hemisphere is growing rapidly and exporting quality wines, often at affordable prices.

The best thing is to try and draw your own conclusions: Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, or both?

Argentina

Australia

Chile

New Zealand

South Africa
