Villa Maria
This is the Sauvignon Blanc that put Villa Maria on the world map. A blend of both Marlborough’s Wairau and Awatere Valleys our winemakers take great care to ensure this wine showcases exceptional balance and consistency every vintage.
The Awatere Valley is influenced by Mt Tapuae-o-uenuku and the cool alpine winds and fresh sea breezes protect the natural acidity in this wine. In contrast, the Wairau Valley has warmer summer months, influencing vineyards to produce a pungent Sauvignon Blanc with ripe citrus and tropical fruit flavours.
The Marlborough growing season started off well with very little frost pressure during spring. Flowering went without a glitch, and due to healthy soil moisture levels the canopies looked lush and vibrant. The start of 2023 summer was mild and unseasonably humid and wet. In February the weather settled and presented us with sunny and warm autumn conditions that provided excellent conditions for our fruit.
The fruit was crushed, pressed and settled for 48 hours before removing the solids from the clear juice press for fermentation. Neutral and aromatic yeast strains were used to aid intensity. Fermentation was carried out at 12-14° C to maintain flavour and aroma retention. After a short period of rest on yeast lees following fermentation, the wine was filtered and bottled to capture its vibrancy and freshness – the essence of quality sauvignon blanc.
