O Produtor, tasting note published in June 12th 2022

Aroma of orchard fruits, revealing ripe yet balanced fruit. Full-bodied, with firm acidity, it shows a more serious and mineral side of Alvarinho.

Vale da Capucha

Vale da Capucha Alvarão is a single-varietal wine made from Alvarinho grapes from the “Cedro” plot.

Climate and soil: Clay-limestone soils of oceanic origin. Good drainage and moderate fertility. Atlantic influence (9 km from the sea). Humid mornings. Sunny and windy afternoons. Low thermal amplitude.

Winemaking: The harvest takes place between late August and the first days of September. Manual harvest during the cooler hours of the day. The grapes are gently pressed whole with stems, and the resulting must is left to rest and decant naturally for 12 months. The next day, it is racked into 500L barrels and stainless steel vats. Fermentation begins in the following hours, driven by indigenous yeasts from our vineyard.

Aging: Aged for 30 months on fine lees, without stirring.

Viticulture and enology: Manuel Marques and Pedro Marques.

Analytical parameters:
pH: 3.02
Total acidity: 6.9 g/l
Sugar: <1.5 g/l Total SO2: 20 mg/l

Vale da Capucha

Located in Turcifal, Torres Vedras, Quinta S. José is the home of Vale da Capucha wines and has been in the Marques family for several generations.

With a clay-limestone soil, just 8 km from the coast, there is a huge variety of fossils here, affirming that the sea once inhabited this area. The humid, Atlantic climate and mild temperatures create ideal conditions for producing fresh white and red wines.

Under the direction of Pedro Marques, an irreverent and restless winemaker who works the wines naturally and completely artisanally, the emphasis on white varieties is on Fernão Pires and Arinto, accompanied by Viosinho, Gouveio, Antão Vaz, and Alvarinho. For reds, the varieties include Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Castelão, and Syrah.

Vale da Capucha wines are organic and DOC.
