Vale D. Maria
In the Douro, the impacts of the drought and high temperatures were very evident and the result is a reduction in grape production in this region, although the reduced berry size has made it more concentrated, thus increasing potential quality. The rain in September (around 30mm) also contributed to this, helping to rehydrate the plants and optimise the ripening process. The harvest was short and very challenging. The quality of the wines is excellent; despite the smaller volume produced, this was a fantastic year in terms of quality, as the low production meant that the wines were very concentrated.
Planted on the slopes of the Sabor River Valley, the grapes that make up Vale D. Maria Douro Superior white 2022 come from Quinta Vale do Sabor, in the Douro Superior, with vines between 20 and 35 years old.
Vinification and ageing: After the manual harvest at Quinta Vale do Sabor, the grapes are destemmed. Half of the blend is crushed in granite lagares and the rest is fermented in stainless steel vats. After fermentation, 65 per cent of the blend is aged in stainless steel vats. The remaining 35% undergoes the final third of alcoholic fermentation in used 500 litre French oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 6 months in French oak barrels with weekly batonnage.
