“Once upon a time… the barrels rolling on Pico”
Much has been said about the island of Pico and its history, but there is a tradition from this Azorean island that the Cooperativa Vitivinícola now brings back to life, with a new white wine: the wine in barrels, rolling towards the sea.
The carved tracks, over hundreds of years, were used to transport the barrels almost to the sea, where they awaited boats that would take the wine from Pico to other destinations. When the tracks ended, it was necessary to roll the barrels to the water’s edge, through the channels carved into the rock, known as Rola Pipas.
This Azorean wine has a long tradition, and its production also stands out for several particularities, starting with the plantation. The vineyards are cultivated in the so-called currais, surrounded by stone walls built to protect the vines from the harsh wind and the salty sea air. The soil of Pico Island also stands out, making these wines unique: a land made up of almost impenetrable basalt lava, combined with the salty winds of the Atlantic.
The very gentle pressing of the selected grapes ensured the extraction of the best characteristics, allowing the wine to best express the grape variety and terroir. It fermented at 15°C for three weeks, remaining on its fine lees for 10 months.
