Once upon a time… the barrels rolling in Pico
Much has been said about the island of Pico and its stories, but there is a tradition of this Azorean island that the Cooperativa Vitinícola comes to recall, with a new white: the wine in barrels, rolling towards the sea.
The engraved rails, over hundreds of years, which served to transport the barrels almost to the sea, where they waited for boats that would take the wine from Pico to other destinations. When these rails ended, it was necessary to roll the barrels to the water’s edge, through the channels opened by man in the rock, the Rola Pipas.
This wine from the Azores has a long tradition and its production also has several particularities, starting in the plantation. The vineyards are cultivated in so-called currais (pens), between stone walls built to protect the vines from the harsh wind and the salty air from the sea. Pico Island’s soil also stands out, making these references unique. A soil constituted by an almost impenetrable basaltic lava, together with the salty Atlantic wind.
The Rola-Pipa 2020 was itself rolled, as stated by Pedro Cavaleiro, general director of Picowines: “A wine with history, which we want to take beyond our borders”.
