Quinta Maria Izabel
Vintage Year
The 2020 vintage was extremely challenging, both due to the global pandemic and the harsh climatic conditions. During the ripening period, high temperatures and dry conditions were recorded. It was the warmest winter since 2005, accompanied by significant rainfall, especially in December. March and June saw abundant rainfall combined with high temperatures, leading to an early budburst.
July and August were hot months, yet the presence of water reserves in the soil ensured balanced ripening. Despite these challenges, the dedication and professionalism of the Quinta Maria Izabel team made it possible to produce a wine with expressive fruit and a remarkably persistent texture.
Winemaking
The grapes, sourced from carefully selected plots, were hand-harvested with rigorous vineyard selection. They were transported in 22 kg crates and stored in refrigerated containers at 6-10°C for 24 hours to preserve their integrity.
Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes underwent meticulous selection on a sorting table. They were then pressed whole-cluster in a pneumatic press, with a gentle pressing process. The free-run must was transferred to stainless steel tanks, where it rested for 48 hours to decant. Alcoholic fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts under controlled temperatures of 14°C.
Aging
Quinta Maria Izabel Branco 2020 aged for 8 months on fine lees, with 80% of the wine matured in French oak barrels and the remaining 20% in stainless steel tanks.
