Quinta do Carmo
HISTORY
Quinta do Carmo wines have been produced in these vineyards since the 19th century. On an estate of around 1,000 hectares, the vineyards total 150 hectares and are surrounded by around 400 hectares of cork oak forest, 100 hectares of woodland and 350 hectares of pasture. For over 100 years, only red wines were produced, and it wasn’t until the early 90s of the last century, when a joint venture was set up with the Lafite Rothschild Group (Bordeaux), that Quinta do Carmo Branco was created, which quickly became the emblem of Alentejo wines. In the winery on the Quinta, equipped with modern winemaking technology, the grapes are rapidly transformed to make the most of what they have to offer.
PROFILE
This white wine is made from a selection of the finest white grapes grown at Quinta do Carmo. Its vineyards are located on both clay soils over marble (in the geological formation of the Estremoz anticline) and clay soils over schist. Harvested at the optimum stage of ripeness, the selected Roupeiro grapes were picked in the first few days of September, the Antão Vaz grapes in the second week, and finally the Arinto grapes in the third week of September. The grapes are harvested at dawn and immediately pressed and cooled on arrival at the winery. A classic white fermentation follows, with pre-fermentation cold maceration on the soft lees and long post-fermentation maceration on the fine lees. Its exuberant profile, aromatically well supported by rich acidity and a firm, full body, means that it can be drunk quickly after bottling or kept for several years.
