TERROIR
Although the Douro is a very old region, thanks to its large size and enormous diversity of terroirs it still has a lot to explore. Quinta de La Rosa is a good example of this diversity, with vineyards from around 100 metres above sea level, next to the river in the imposing Vale do Inferno, to 500 metres above sea level in the Lamelas vineyard. We also have different sun exposures to the east, north and south and a great diversity of grape varieties. Always with a privileged view of the River Douro, all the Quinta’s grapes are letter A – the best the region has to offer.
The poor, schist soils, combined with the varied topography, favour full-bodied wines with excellent levels of minerality, acidity and freshness. This combination of complexity and power, which is achieved when we have good ripeness, and the elegance and freshness so characteristic of our Quinta, has made our wines famous. Our wines have elegance in the expression of the terroir without exaggeration in maturation, extraction, tannin or wood.
VINDIMA
Abundant rainfall in the winter months replenished the water table, which was good for the vines. But unfortunately luck wasn’t on our side, and on 31 May we were hit by a
hailstorm. Our vineyards in Vedeal suffered the most, where we lost almost 50 per cent of our production, which is very unusual. The rest of our vineyards
affected. While most of Western Europe was burning, the Douro experienced a relatively cool summer with normal temperatures. At the end of August we had a few days of extreme temperatures, but by the 28th the heat had calmed down giving ideal ripening conditions. It was exciting to see our newly planted vines starting to produce, especially the Alvarinho, which was harvested on 26 August. This was followed by a complicated and lengthy harvest due to periods of rain. Fortunately, we’re small enough to start and stop the harvest, making sure that we only pick the grapes when they’re ready. We finally finished on Monday 4 October.
Thanks to good viticultural practices, the grapes held up very well and, despite the rain, there were hardly any signs of rot. Our winemaker, Jorge Moreira, is pleased with the overall quality.
