O Produtor, tasting note published in March 23rd 2022

The intense heat of 2021 forced us to harvest earlier to maintain optimal freshness and vibrant acidity. On the nose, delicate floral aromas blend with ripe citrus notes. Seductive, with excellent tension, the La Rosa Reserva reveals hints of green pineapple and citrus notes before giving way to a long, subtle finish.

La Rosa

Still largely unexplored, the terroir in the Douro offers incredible opportunity. None more so than La Rosa’s, whose vines rise dramatically out of the river with the imposing Vale do Inferno vineyard, and climb steadily upwards to top out at 500 meters with Lamelas, whose magnificent views overlook the very heart of the region. The estate’s grapes are category A – the very best the Douro has to offer.
Schist and granite soils, along with the extremely varied topography, enable the white wines to have remarkable acidity, minerality, and freshness. La Rosa’s whites are characterised by their floral, citric notes and balanced fruit.

Vintage: The winter months saw plenty of rain, which replenished the water table and helped the vineyards recover. The summer was relatively cool, with normal temperatures. At the end of August, we had some days of extreme temperatures, but by the 28th, the heat had calmed down, providing ideal ripening conditions.
We had two periods of rain during September, which meant we had to start and stop picking more than usual. Thanks to good viticultural practices, the grapes held up remarkably well and, despite the rain, there was virtually no sign of any rot.

Vinification: Indigenous grape varieties from old vines – 50% Viosinho, 20% Rabigato, 20% Arinto, 10% Gouveio.
The wine was partially fermented and aged in barrels (50%), with the remainder in small stainless-steel vats, before being bottled in March 2022.

Quinta de La Rosa

Quinta de la Rosa has been in the Bergqvist family since 1906, although they have been in the port trade as shippers under the family name, Feueheerd, since 1815. It currently has around 55 hectares under vine and produces around 50,000 litres of port and 160,000 litres of table wine each year.

Quinta de la Rosa was given as a christening present for Claire Feueheerd, Sophia’s grandmother, in 1906. The family port shipping company, Feueheerd, was sold in the 1930s but La Rosa was kept and run by Sophia’s grandmother, Claire. In 1988 Sophia and her father, Tim Bergqvist, decided to restart the family business and launched Quinta de la Rosa as a top quality port producer onto the market place.

Starting in the early 1990s, the Bergqvist famuly were one of the pioneers in taking red wine production in the Douro region seriously. Quinta de la Rosa’s wines, both red and white, have won many accolades in the press and are sold in many prestigious restaurants and wine stores around the world. Since 2002, Jorge Moreira, one of the finest wine makers in Portugal, has been making wines at La Rosa.

Quinta de la Rosa is situated in Northern Portugal, 100kms inland from Oporto. It is set in the heart of the Alto Douro ‘A’ grade port growing area and is located along the banks of the river, near Pinhão.
