O Produtor, tasting note published in July 27th 2023

Characterized by its freshness, minerality, and well-defined structure, this wine manifests citrus aromas in harmony with subtle vegetal notes. On the palate, it stands out for its perfect balance between acidity and bold minerality.

Passagem

Quinta das Bandeiras is located on the other side of the river, facing the famous Vale do Meão, in the heart of the Upper Douro. It is crossed by the abandoned railway line that connected Pocinho to Barca-de-Alva, hence the name “Passagem” (Passage) for the wines of the estate. The 100-hectare property was acquired in 2005 by the Berqvist family – owners of Quinta de La Rosa, in partnership with winemaker Jorge Moreira. The goal of the Passagem brand is to realize the potential of the Upper Douro in expressive wines that combine refined fruits and aromas with excellent freshness and sobriety.

Quality was recognized when the Passagem Grande Reserva Tinto 2009 received the award for the best Portuguese wine at the Essência do Vinho in 2017.

Harvest: The winter was relatively dry and warm, so the water table was still shallow in the spring. We had good bud break and flowering, but the summer heat waves hit us hard. Heat peaks came with intervals of relatively lower temperatures, with the village of Pinhão reaching 47ºC, the highest temperature ever recorded. But at the end of the harvest, the year 2022 surprised us. Flexibility in the harvest was crucial for this. Thus, the 2022 harvest was characterized by a two-phase harvest; the first being very hot and intense, focused on quick and flexible picking; the second, less intense, after the rain in mid-September.

Vinification and Aging: Fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged for 6 months in French Allier oak barrels (50% new wood). Bottled in May 2023.

Quinta de La Rosa

Quinta de la Rosa has been in the Bergqvist family since 1906, although they have been in the port trade as shippers under the family name, Feueheerd, since 1815. It currently has around 55 hectares under vine and produces around 50,000 litres of port and 160,000 litres of table wine each year.

Quinta de la Rosa was given as a christening present for Claire Feueheerd, Sophia’s grandmother, in 1906. The family port shipping company, Feueheerd, was sold in the 1930s but La Rosa was kept and run by Sophia’s grandmother, Claire. In 1988 Sophia and her father, Tim Bergqvist, decided to restart the family business and launched Quinta de la Rosa as a top quality port producer onto the market place.

Starting in the early 1990s, the Bergqvist famuly were one of the pioneers in taking red wine production in the Douro region seriously. Quinta de la Rosa’s wines, both red and white, have won many accolades in the press and are sold in many prestigious restaurants and wine stores around the world. Since 2002, Jorge Moreira, one of the finest wine makers in Portugal, has been making wines at La Rosa.

Quinta de la Rosa is situated in Northern Portugal, 100kms inland from Oporto. It is set in the heart of the Alto Douro ‘A’ grade port growing area and is located along the banks of the river, near Pinhão.
