Pasmados
This wine originates from the exclusive Quinta dos Pasmados region in Azeitão. In 1998, a pivotal decision was made to replace the Chardonnay grape with Viosinho, while also altering the origin of Arinto and Esgana from clay-limestone to sandy soils. In 2005, with the goal of enhancing the wine’s complexity, the Viognier grape, cultivated in our vineyards for over 40 years, was added to the blend.
Around 1999, winemaker Domingos Soares Franco discovered several bottles of 1963 Pasmados White in the cellars. With a yellowish hue that reflected its natural aging, the wine revealed evolved aromas that were fine, velvety, and subtly fruity. On the palate, it stood out for its pleasantness, surprisingly robust structure, and remarkable acidity, showcasing exceptional quality.
Inspired by this discovery, Domingos Soares Franco decided to experiment with producing a Pasmados capable of aging, taking the 1963 vintage as a reference. From the finest harvests, small quantities of bottles are stored in the cellar, later released with the almost forgotten designation of Garrafeira. This reintroduced classification gave birth to the Pasmados Garrafeira.
