João Guedes

João Guedes, tasting note published in May 25th 2022

Citrus-coloured wine, bright appearance, elegant aromas with fresh vegetable notes, some hints of exotic fruit and a slight toastiness. Intense and fresh on the palate, with calibrated acidity harmonised with unctuousness and good volume. Finishes elegant and with great freshness.

We place special emphasis on environmental and health issues, which is why the vines are cultivated using sustainable practices and production is certified by the ‘Integrated Production Standards’. When it comes to soil maintenance, special attention is paid to combating erosion and increasing the organic matter content, which is why we favour the non-mobilisation of the soil and the application of natural manure.

Soils:Clay-Calcareous

Vineyards: Until 2019, the vineyards located at Quinta do Porto Nogueira were cultivated under sustainable agricultural practices certified by the “Integrated Production Standards”. The vineyards are currently managed in Organic Production Mode.

Grapes: The Sauvignon Blanc grapes were harvested from the “Vinha d’Almargem”, planted in 2012 with 1.2ha and a north-west-south-east (NW-SE) sun exposure.

Vinification: Rigorous selection of bunches and berries carried out on 100 per cent of the grapes. Gentle pneumatic pressing, followed by fermentation at a temperature of 15ºC in small stainless steel vats. Partial fermentation in used French oak barrels followed by batonnage for 120 days.

Casa Romana Vini

In the lands that today constitute Quinta do Porto Nogueira and Quinta da Escusa, the family began to plant vineyards, privileging the terroirs once occupied by old vines, always with the objective of producing exceptional grapes and making unique wines, originated in Quinta Nogueira , Quinta da Escusa and Quinta da Página. Quinta do Porto Nogueira is located in Alguber, in the municipality of Cadaval, about 70 km west of Lisbon. In the first half of the eighteenth century, it was always owned by the same family and was donated to the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, around 1980. Since 2004 it is a Romana Vini estate. Quinta da Escusa is located in Senhora da Escusa, in the municipality of Rio Maior, about 70 km northeast of Lisbon, between the villages of Quintas and Vale Barco. Part of the Quinta da Escusa estate belonged to the grandparents and parents of the current owners who, over the decades, exercised agriculture and viticulture. The secular house of Quinta do Porto Nogueira is set against the Roman Bridge over the Arnóia river, which would be the passage of the Roman road that linked Collippo (near Leiria) to Eburobrittium (Óbidos) and that followed to Olisipo (Lisbon). The bridge is testimony to the presence of the Romans in the region and inspired the name Romana Vini, Family Winery.
