O Produtor, tasting note published in May 28th 2023

The Mirabilis Branco is a sublime wine, delicate and crisp on the palate, made from grapes from small, centuries-old vineyards where Viosinho and Gouveio dominate, along with numerous other extremely low-yielding varieties, almost extinct in the region. The selected wood is intentionally second and third year, with only a small percentage of new wood, to avoid dominating and to slowly integrate the intense fruit. The focus is on French and Hungarian oak, resulting in an extremely elegant wine where freshness and acidity intertwine.

Mirabilis

Mirabilis, as the Latin name suggests, is a wonderful wine. Since 2008, an in-depth study has been conducted to create a Grand White from the Douro, meticulously searching for small growers with old and very old vineyards. This project involved several years of bottle aging studies on different lots to understand the perfect harmony with wood. A journey to Burgundy provided the final touch needed to create a dream white wine.

Small, tightly packed clusters and delicate berries limit production to 2100 kg per hectare, on soils located above 650 meters in altitude, geologically classified as schist/granite transition soils, in the villages of Vilar de Maçada, Cabeda, Tabuaço, and Candedo. These conditions grant the musts an impressive authenticity.

The year 2022 was one of the hottest and driest on record. The rainfall in early September allowed for some recovery of the vines and an almost perfect final ripening, resulting in white wines with ripe fruit aromas, remarkable structure, combining textures, acidity, and minerality. Tense and profound wines.

Winemaking Notes: Whole cluster pressing. Completion of alcoholic fermentation and aging for 9 months in French oak barrels (Tronçais, Vosges, Nevers, Jura) and Hungarian oak. Fortnightly bâtonnage during the first 5 months.
Bottling: May 2023.

Winemaker: Jorge Alves.
Viticulture: Ana Mota.

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is a place of extreme beauty in the heart of Douro valley and owned by Amorim family since 1999.
The family connection to the wine comes from afar, through its connection with the export houses of Vila Nova de Gaia in the cork business. Meanwhile the dream came true and the project is now in the hands of the 4th generation of the family.
With a story longer than 250 years, the property displays conserved structures and the cellar original building from 1764, after interventions by the architect Arnaldo Barbosa.
But the «quinta» is much earlier than this and history confirms it as a great land belonging to the Portuguese Royal House, having been identified its first owner in 1725.
The winery produced more than 3,500 barrels of wine from neighboring estates and it was soon ‘integrated in the first demarcation of the region’. The historic sites that are still preserved give notice to this historic weight.
An entrepreneur spirit and family vision did however the difference because, combined with a passionate commitment to the future, determined the beginning of multiple changes to a path of oenological excellence.
