López de Heredia

Grapes from Viña Tondonia are always used in the production of the highest quality wines, and naturally, during truly exceptional vintages.

The character of these wines is shaped by several factors: the climate, the soil, careful work in the vineyard, the winemaking process, and finally, the meticulous care during the long ageing period in oak barrels, followed by bottle ageing.

It is a long, almost mystical process — a path of continuous refinement until the wine reaches its full expression.

Winemaking and Ageing: Blend of Viura (90%) and Malvasía (10%). Aged for 6 years in oak barrels, with racking twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites. Further ageing in 75 cl bottles, unfiltered.

R. López de Heredia/ Viña Tondonia, S. A.

For 147 years, four generations of the López de Heredia family have been dedicated to producing exceptional and unique wines. Masterpieces that have achieved what the founder of the company, Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, defined in the late nineteenth century as the “Supreme Rioja”.

Vineyard care, scrupulous grape selection, aging in oak barrels in the heart of deep underground galleries, and subsequent aging in bottles, all contribute to making these wines world-famous, with their exceptional bouquet.

No grapes from other regions have been used to make any of López de Heredia’s wines; not even when the Consejo Regulador (Regulating Body) of the DOC Rioja allowed, once, the use of grapes from other regions under certain conditions and circumstances. This winery has never used other grapes or wines since its foundation in 1877; a fact recognized by the Regulating Body in the form of a “Diploma de Garantía” (Diploma of Guarantee) awarded exclusively to López de Heredia/Viña Tondonia, S. A. This diploma is proudly displayed on the back label of all bottles.
