O Produtor, tasting note published in September 27th 2021

In spirit, the perfect Gentil should be aromatic, appetizing, yet dry and gastronomic. On the nose, it is the fruit of aromatic grape varieties that presents itself first, typical of Alsace, opening to mirabelle plum, rose, quince, and citrus zest. Generous, it quickly invites a first sip. In the mouth, harmony prevails. Smooth throughout, the palate unfolds, pleasant, without heaviness, bringing a fresh and delicate finish.

Hugel

The perfect introduction to the wines of the Hugel Family, appreciated worldwide. A wine for all occasions. The only wine in our production that is not of a single grape variety. A superb wine of pleasure! It combines, with wonderful harmony, the varied and magnificent grape varieties of the Alsace region. A typical and authentic wine of the region, full of flavor, fruity, dry.

The Gentil “Hugel” revives an ancient Alsatian tradition in which blends of noble grapes were called “Gentil” and combines the soft and spicy side of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the fruitiness of Muscat, and the refreshing character of Sylvaner.

2020 began with one of the mildest winters of the century and less than 5 days of frost in Alsace. As a consequence of this non-existent winter, already in early March, the buds begin to swell at the first rise in temperature, and on March 19, we witnessed an exceptionally early budburst. Vine growth is rapid, flowering ends on an absolute record of earliness on June 2, and the pace of work in the vineyard is brutal. The summer of 2020 was very dry, with less than 130mm of rainfall in three months, and harvest begins on September 7 under the best auspices. Not a single grain of rot to report, the harvest is exceptionally healthy, and the absence of botrytis will not allow for the production of late harvests. But 2020 will be a great harvest in the style of 2015 or 2009.

A kaleidoscopic wine, originating from predominantly clay-limestone plots around Riquewihr and south of Colmar. Grapes exclusively hand-harvested in small containers to ensure the harvest arrives intact at the press.

Vinification: The grapes are transported to pneumatic presses by gravity, without manipulation. After static clarification for a few hours, the musts are transferred to vats or tanks where fermentation will take place with temperature control (from 22 to 24°C). A single racking before winter, where the wine naturally clarifies without artificial cold treatment. Slight gentle filtration before bottling in spring and then bottle aging in our cellars until its commercialization. Vintage entirely bottled with DIAM, the cork without cork taste.

Famille Hugel

Hugel & Fils was founded in 1639 in the picturesque town of Riquewihr, Alsace, France. It is a 100% family owned company and is currently managed by the 12th generation.
The family owns a 28 hectare property with top quality vineyards in Riquewihr, part of the same classified “Grand Cru” and they also buy grapes from 121 hectares of vineyards under contract from producers. The Hugel estates are planted solely with noble varieties from Alsace, with some vineyards reaching 35 years of age.
Hugel produces around 110,000 cases of wine per year, 90% of which is exported to over 100 countries in the world, to whom ‘Alsace’ is generally synonymous with ‘Hugel’.
Vineyards have been grown in Alsace for over 2000 years, which has brought much prosperity to the region. Alsace has a unique climate, it is the second driest region in France, which allows grapes to ripen slowly and produce dry and aromatic wines, elegant and of unparalleled intensity: a perfect combination to accompany any dish of Asian and Western cuisine.
Hugel wines, with their characteristic yellow labels, present the pure character of the mono grape varieties Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Pinot Blanc, without the need to resort to wooden stages or the addition of sugar.
