O Produtor, tasting note published in July 15th 2020
Ferradosa Douro White Old Vineshas vibrant fruit in the nose, with touches of apricot, peach and hints of some fresh tropical fruits. The oak is present with vanilla and a very slight smoky note. In the mouth this wine reveals a very fresh and crisp grip that break through the oak and create an extremely elegant, vibrant and long white wine.
Ferradosa Douro White Old Vines shows the unique character of the different areas of the Douro region. The grapes for this wine are grown in two separate plots, where we have found vineyards that we feel express the Douro. These are plantations with more than 70 years of age, with a mixed plantation of many varieties, showing the true Douro old Vines. It ́s a mixture of mostly granite soils and a small % grown in schist soils. All grapes are de-storked before being slightly crushed by a pneumatic press and the resulting must decanted for 24 hours at 10° Celsius in 2,500 litre stainless steel vats. The must is then racked into new and one year old 225 litres French oak barrels, where it will ferment for 25+ days at controlled temperatures between 10° and 14° Celsius. The wine will age in the same barriques for another 8 months, with battonage.

Quinta da Ferradosa
The first references to Quinta da Ferradosa date back to the end of the 19th century, when it belonged to the Borges family.
At the beginning of the 20th century it was bought by Real Companhia Velha, the oldest Port Wine company.
The construction of the Valeira dam caused a rise in the water level of the Douro River, submerging a large area of vineyard of Quinta da Ferradosa, which affected its viticultural potential and made its access difficult. In the 1990’s, the Quinta was bought by Joaquim Manuel Calem, owner of the company AA Calem & filho Lda, one of the main Portuguese companies producing and exporting Port Wine, created by his great-great-grandfather in 1859. The company remained in the family until the 21st century, when it was sold, together with the brand. However, the Heritage of the Quintas remained in the Calem family. Joaquim Manuel Calem, father of the current owner, had a great passion for Ferradosa, and planted 13 hectares with three of the main varieties of the region: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. He was also responsible for the installation of electricity on the property, and also had great plans to rebuild the ruins here, in order to bring back to the Quinta its golden times.
