Dr. Loosen
Caused by the misty mornings along the Mosel River, the Botrytis fungus, also known as “Noble Rot,” draws water out of the affected grapes, leaving behind an ultra-concentrated nectar.
The Riesling grape variety can produce an enormous range of different wines. For this reason, the grapes affected by Botrytis are strictly separated from the healthy ones and are selected based on the degree of rot and advanced dehydration, resulting in Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese wines.
Beerenauslese, pronounced [bear-en ows-lay-zuh], means “berry selection.” This Dr. Loosen is thus a classic Mosel-style beerenauslese; a rich, honeyed dessert wine made from a careful selection of 100% botrytis-affected grapes, grown in slate-colored soil.
