Dr. Loosen
Slightly sweet wines with lower alcohol content, Dr. Loosen’s Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese are full-bodied, deep, and complex.
Erdener Treppchen is so named for the stone stairs that were built into the slope so that workers could access the vines. The soil is red slate, which produces complex wines with intense minerality. Recently, the vineyard was reorganized, revealing an ancient Roman press house at the base of the hill.
The Spätlese (“late harvest”) designation means that the grapes get an extra one or two weeks of ripening time, which helps in developing higher ripeness and deeper flavors than Kabinett. The Erdener Treppchen Spätlese is sourced from a truly “grand cru” vineyard in the village of Erden.
A quality wine from sustainable farming, in accordance with strict German environmental regulations.
“Concentrated and sweet on the palate, with a juicy texture, this is an intense, dense, and structured Spätlese based on super ripe and concentrated fruits. Excellent and substantial, requiring patience.” (Wine Advocate on the 2019 vintage, tasted in September 2020)
