Quinta do Ferro was a pioneer in its founding, being the first winery in the region to be built and designed from the ground up to produce sparkling wine. Founded in 1999, it is a family project located on the right bank of the Douro River in Gestaçô Baião, a sub-region of the Vinho Verde region, and bordering the Douro region, also known as “Douro Verde”. In 2022, Bruno Ribeiro & Eugénio de Sousa Lda. takes control of Quinta do Ferro, continuing the project and creating the brand Coroa do Ferro.
At Quinta do Ferro, the focus has been on native grape varieties, producing only Portuguese grapes. These include Avesso, a native grape of Gestaçô Baião, a unique and original white grape with a strong and complex personality; Arinto, a white grape planted throughout the country, aromatic, fresh, with good acidity and minerality; and finally, a grape often misunderstood, vinhão, a red and teinturier grape, with a strong character, mainly planted in the northern part of the country, which, due to the characteristics of the Quinta’s terroir, loses its typical roughness and gains elegance and smoothness.
The two main vineyards have a special microclimate and are on granitic soil, which gives them minerality, salinity, and a vegetal touch. One vineyard is located at almost 400 meters above sea level, known as the riverside vineyard; the other is at over 600 meters above sea level, considered the mountain vineyard. This is the main vineyard, the mountain one, and it is from here that the grapes for the sparkling wine are harvested.
Quinta do Ferro has received awards nationally and internationally and has received good reviews from major opinion makers worldwide, such as Robert Parker and Sarah Ahmed.
