Casa Grande Sant'ana
Made up of soils of granite origin, the Marco de Canaveses region has a favourable climate for the production of great vinho verde. Located in the interior of the Region, the region is protected from the influence of the Atlantic and at a high average altitude, so the temperature ranges are higher than the average for the Region and the summer is hotter. Avesso was the earliest grape variety of the 2017 vintage – with a rapid ripeness, the grapes proved ready to harvest earlier than all the others this year. The first quarter of the year was drier overall than 2016, with July and August being virtually rain-free months with warm days and cooler nights, enabling concentration of aromas, grade and sugar.
Harvest started in the last week of August. The grapes were totally destemmed and lightly pressed in a pneumatic press. Only the teardrop must was selected, which was then cooled and decanted at low temperatures. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures for 3 weeks. It was only aged in stainless steel to preserve all the aromas of fresh fruit, followed by bottle ageing for about 6 months.
