O Produtor, tasting note published in May 17th 2024

On the nose, this harvest has produced a very fresh and complex wine, with citrus fruit, grapefruit, in harmony with discreet floral nuances and strong mineral notes typical of the terroir, complexed by the notes resulting from ageing on fine lees and barrels. The freshness and volume of the mouth are surprising, with a very long, fresh and mineral finish.

GRAPES
The grapes were vinified in our winery at Quinta das Marvalhas in Almendra, in the heart of the Douro Superior. We selected grapes produced in very old vineyards of the Douro Superior from the varieties, Códega do Larinho, Rabigato and Viosinho.

VINIFICATION
In our winery, with the most modern technology and total temperature control, we eliminated bunches that were not in perfect condition. The grapes were vinified with total destemming, followed by soft crushing and skin maceration; for about 12h. After this period in an inert atmosphere, the grapes were pressed in a pneumatic press, followed by a period of clarification of the must, from 24 to 48 hours depending on the grape variety and the state of maturation. Vinification in hyper-reduction, fermentation at 12oC and racking under controlled atmosphere. The wines were aged successively in stainless steel and French oak barrels on fine lees (batocasse) until bottling.

AGING: 50% in stainless steel and 50% in French oak barrels for 8 months, on fine lees.

CARM Vinhos

In the Douro Superior (Upper Douro), wherethe organic cultures of vines, olive oil and almonds coexist with an endangered fauna, ourfamily affirmed our connection to our landthrough the founding of CARM – Casa Agrícola Roboredo Madeira. These lands, where our Estates are situated, continue to give refugeto the golden eagle, the fishing eagle, the griffin and the wild partridge, so typical of the slopes of the Douro Superior and are home to a flora of rock rose, juniper, fennel, rosemary and sour flowers, among other species. CARM Estate farms or quintas comprise over 125 hectares of vineyards, 220 hectares of olive groves and 60 hectares of almond plantations.

Our olive oils are produced and bottled inour sophisticated ecological mills, wheretechnology meets the tradition provided byancient stone mills. All waste is recycled and reintroduced into the land, thus improving thestructure and fertility of the soils of our olive groves. Each parcel of grapes from our vineyards is vinified, aged and bottled in our own cellars according to the latest technology, while traditional vats are used for fermentation. We also produce a line of “gourmet” specialties and vinegar, organic honey and premium almonds. All products are available directly fromthe CARM premises, in Almendra.

Our products epitomize our passion for the landand our respect for nature. In Portugal, CARM is considered a pioneer of organic agriculture. We show our respect for the local people of ourregion by creating jobs in a traditionally migratory zone. When tasting a CARM wine, olive oil or “gourmet” specialty, we like you to share with us the essence of our homelands, the ancestry of the Archeological Côa-Valley Park, the wild fauna and flora of the Natural Park of the International Douro River and our passion for all that our region offers. Our winery and estates lie proudly in one of the oldest and most noble demarcated wine regions of the world– the Alto Douro Vinhateiro (the Upper Douro Wine Region) – also considered the cradle of the best oils in Portugal.
