O Produtor, tasting note published in November 19th 2021

A blend of two mountain vineyards, our Fijnbosch estate vineyard and the neighboring Nooitgedacht vineyard, Silene provides an aromatic explosion of lime, lemon, orange blossom, jasmine, and spices. A tight palate of citrus and rich minerals drives a saline finish, light on its feet yet dense and long.

Capensis

Capensis wines are released once a year, with a limited quantity.

Capensis comes from the Latin word meaning “from the cape.” Produced from some of the highest-elevation vineyards in the Cape Town region, winemaker Graham Weerts creates an expressive Chardonnay that honors the ancestral greatness of South Africa and highlights it as a world-class producer of Chardonnay.

It’s a 400-year story of grape cultivation leading to a contemporary renaissance of terroir-driven wines.

Wine production in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, dates back to 1600 when vineyards supplied wine to ships of the Dutch East India Company en route to India. In the 1700s and early 1800s, South Africa was known for its dessert wines based on Muscat of Constantia, coveted throughout Europe.

With the end of apartheid in 1994, South Africa’s remarkable wine production potential became known outside the country, and viticulturists began researching and selecting the best grape varieties. The commitment to Chardonnay comes from the belief that true great terroirs around the world are revealed by only a few noble grape varieties.

South Africa’s Western Cape region can be considered both the oldest wine region of the New World and the newest of the Old World. Capensis skillfully combines these two aspects – the oldest and the newest – incorporating the incomparable quality that comes from old, gnarled vines planted in some of the oldest soils in the world and representing the energy of a new generation of winemakers determined to make world-class wines with state-of-the-art techniques.

Jackson Family Wines

We see possibilities in a handful of earth. We have been a family-owned business since we planted our first vine in 1974. Wine is our passion, and from this passion arises our multigenerational vision to cultivate wines of distinction, conduct business ethically, and empower our people.

It has been a labor of love to care for and build our vineyards and estates. Inspired by the age-old principle that great wines can only come from great vineyards, we sought out the cool, coastal ridges around the world in search of some of the best vineyard land. Each of our wineries has its own fingerprint and style, driven by the terroir of our family-owned vineyards and the trust we have in our winemakers to pursue their philosophies for distinguished wines.

Mountains, hills, ridges, and benches. It is in these places that Jess Jackson, our husband, father, grandfather, and founder believed grew the finest grapes for the most exceptional wines in the world. It is here that we began our journey of wine, family, art, and responsible winemaking.

Jess Stonestreet Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011. Barbara Banke, Jess’ partner in life and in business, was named Chairman. Don Hartford was appointed Vice Chairman of the company.

All estate vineyards earn certification under the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CCSW) program (2010), the company installs its first solar panels (2012), and collaborates on a pilot project with Tesla Energy (2015). The company is named Drinks Business Green Company of the Year (2013) and recognized with the EPA Green Power Leadership Awards (2013, 2016, 2018) and California Green Medal Leader Award (2016).

The family’s commitment to producing wines with a distinct sense of place continues with its first acquisitions in Oregon’s Willamette Valley (2013) and South Africa (2014).

Barbara Banke is the first woman to be named Wine Enthusiast’s Wine Personality of the Year (2012) and was honored with Wine Spectator’s Distinguished Service award (2017). Kendall-Jackson is named “2017 American Winery of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast. Katie Jackson is selected for Wine Enthusiast’s annual “40 under 40” list, highlighting those who are shaping the wine industry (2018).

As the family grows, the children and grandchildren of our founders take their place in the company’s leadership, charting a path for the future.

Currently, the company produces wine in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Oregon, Australia, Chile, France, Italy, and South Africa. It has several internationally renowned brands such as Kendall-Jackson, La Crema, Capensis…
