A wine of great elegance and mineral and fruity expression, served by an excellent acidic balance that promises a long life in the bottle.

Anselmo Mendes | Mario Sérgio

Anselmo Mendes and Mário Sérgio Nuno are two key figures in Portuguese wine. In their native regions, Monção and Melgaço, and Bairrada, they create authentic wines that fully express the territory where they were born.

These affinities one day led to a natural question: why not make a wine together, using the grape varieties we love the most? Thus, during the 2020 harvest, they each decided to select a special plot in their vineyards, representative of the best the region can produce, and vinify it separately in their cellars. Anselmo Mendes selected Alvarinho from the Parcela do Paço, at Quinta da Torre, in Monção. Mário Sérgio harvested Bical grapes from the Vinha do Cabeço, at Quinta das Bágeiras.

Alvarinho and Bical are two excellent grape varieties, well adapted to temperate climates with Atlantic influence. The Alvarinho from Quinta da Torre grows on fluvial terrace soils of granitic origin. The Bical from Quinta das Bágeiras thrives on clay soil with a strong limestone component.

The musts fermented in used French oak barrels, 400 liters for the Alvarinho and 500 liters for the Bical. Both aged for 9 months in the barrels. In June 2021, the Bical produced in Bairrada traveled to Anselmo Mendes’ winery in Melgaço, where it was blended with the Alvarinho in equal proportions, and the batch was bottled shortly thereafter.

The result? A wine of extreme elegance with enormous potential for bottle aging.
