O Produtor, tasting note published in December 7th 2022

Natural old gold color. Bright and clear. On the nose, we start with a clear touch of peat smoke and a slight hint of iodine; followed by sweet and fruity aromas. Pleasant cereal aroma combined with notes of pastry and dried fruits. Finally, subtle notes of Sherry are perceived. On the palate, we discover a medium-bodied and unctuous character. Notes of honey, licorice, and peat smoke mixed with spicy notes are found. Medium finish with sweet cereal notes and a slight bitterness.

Basque Moonshiners

In Basque, BIKKUN means something done together, like a couple. This is the origin of BIKKUN Vatted Malt Whisky, a 100% malt whisky resulting from an international collaboration between Basque Moonshiners and Distell International.

To create this whisky, peated malt from the Scottish islands was used, as well as malt with a marked sherry character from the Highlands; completing the blend with the distinctive Single Malt from Basque Moonshiners aged in Rioja Alavesa oak barrels and present in the AGOT Single Malt Basque Whisky.

Basque Moonshinners

A story born during the Civil War. Antonello Favro was an Italian soldier who arrived in Fontecha (Basque Country, in northern Spain) in 1936 to fight during the Spanish Civil War. Antonello taught Tomás Ortíz de Zárate how to produce vodka. Using an original recipe from the fields of Piedmont, they took advantage of the abundant and high-quality local potatoes to handcraft the first spirits.

This ancient recipe has been preserved to this day, just like the old still of over 70 years. The Basque Moonshiners distillery was born from this ancient recipe, with its first creation, BASMOON vodka, followed by other spirits.

Founded in 2014, Basque Moonshiners is a micro-distillery. Each of its spirits is handcrafted with care, emphasizing every detail. Batches do not exceed 1,100 bottles, manually numbered by Master Distiller Juan Carlos Ortíz de Zárate.

Inspired by the “moonshiners” – the courageous American distillers who defied Prohibition during the Dry Laws, distilling their own moonshine at night in pots and copper stills hidden in the forests – the distillery, led by the old pot in which the Basque distillers produced their homemade liqueurs, will soon host new creations: quality products, new to the market, and artisanal.

Because, like the “moonshiners,” sometimes we have to take risks to enjoy good things.
