Basmoon is the final result of an ancient recipe perfected over time. Crafted in Vitoria at the Basque Moonshiners distillery, it is a five-times distilled premium potato vodka, handmade to fully express the flavors and aromas of its ingredients; its honeyed touch on the palate provides balance, and its natural flavor is unmistakable.

Potato, a buried treasure: In a bloody 19th century, with a population impoverished by famine, the potato became an essential nutrient for both the diet and the economy of Álava, the southwestern territory of the Basque Country. Immune to adverse local weather conditions such as rain, snow, frost… it is now a symbol of international quality.

Basmoon Vodka is made with the Agria variety, a local planting potato, recognized worldwide for its quality and authentic taste. Rich in starch, it allows for high alcohol efficiency, enabling the production of a handcrafted vodka according to the original recipe. With a natural and balanced taste and a smooth touch. Unique.

Basque Moonshinners

A story born during the Civil War. Antonello Favro was an Italian soldier who arrived in Fontecha (Basque Country, in northern Spain) in 1936 to fight during the Spanish Civil War. Antonello taught Tomás Ortíz de Zárate how to produce vodka. Using an original recipe from the fields of Piedmont, they took advantage of the abundant and high-quality local potatoes to handcraft the first spirits.

This ancient recipe has been preserved to this day, just like the old still of over 70 years. The Basque Moonshiners distillery was born from this ancient recipe, with its first creation, BASMOON vodka, followed by other spirits.

Founded in 2014, Basque Moonshiners is a micro-distillery. Each of its spirits is handcrafted with care, emphasizing every detail. Batches do not exceed 1,100 bottles, manually numbered by Master Distiller Juan Carlos Ortíz de Zárate.

Inspired by the “moonshiners” – the courageous American distillers who defied Prohibition during the Dry Laws, distilling their own moonshine at night in pots and copper stills hidden in the forests – the distillery, led by the old pot in which the Basque distillers produced their homemade liqueurs, will soon host new creations: quality products, new to the market, and artisanal.

Because, like the “moonshiners,” sometimes we have to take risks to enjoy good things.
