O Produtor, tasting note published in October 20th 2020

Oppaco has a bright ruby colour and reveals aromas of fresh red fruit with hints of spice. The flavour is elegant and persistent, with lingering tannins. Soalheiro Oppaco has the same potential for ageing in the bottle as our white wines.

Soalheiro

Oppaco represents a real innovation. In the Minho region, the Vinhão grape variety expresses itself in a very interesting way, particularly due to its high concentration of tannins and colour. That’s why we considered it important to blend it with other grape varieties, in this case with Alvarinho and Pinot Noir, to produce a softer, more elegant wine. Vinhão is one of the few red grape varieties in which the pulp is red, producing a must that is already coloured. The grapes are pressed immediately after harvest to avoid too much skin contact. Alvarinho and Vinhão ferment together without maceration, while Pinot Noir ferments separately and spends some time in contact with the skins. After fermentation, 30 per cent of the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months. Soalheiro Oppaco is a wine with a similar potential for evolution to the other wines in the Soalheiro range. It’s elegant and delicate, but consistent… a red wine made by a white wine producer.

Quinta de Soalheiro

oalheiro is the first Alvarinho brand in the northern point of Portugal named Melgaço and one of the first Portuguese producers of Alvarinho. Here the Alvarinho is special, the land is protected by a range of mountains that create conditions of rainfall, temperature and sunshine hours necessary for the best ripening of the grapes. We hope you too will love its vibrant and elegant expression, something we’ve been passionate.
