It was the great landowner and beer industrialist, José Rovisco Pais, who donated his estates in Pegões to the Lisbon Civil Hospitals. On these estates, the largest Internal Colonization project was carried out, settling hundreds of agricultural couples and planting 830 hectares of vineyards. The Agricultural Cooperative, established by Decree on March 7, 1958, was created to provide technical and logistical support for the production of the first wines of Pegões.
In the last 15 years, the Cooperative has followed a systematic strategy of modernization and financial stabilization, aiming to improve and enhance the wines of its brand. During this period, the Cooperative invested around €15,000,000 to equip the Winery with modern systems for cold stabilization and winemaking, epoxy coating for the original concrete tanks, stainless steel fermentation tanks with temperature control, vacuum and pneumatic presses, modern filling and labeling lines, a wastewater treatment plant (ETAR), wine-aging cellars with a capacity for more than 3,000 barrels, as well as works for the refurbishment and conservation of buildings and paving of the factory access roads. In terms of internal organization, the company advanced its computerization and is currently certified under the NP EN ISO 9001:2000 and HACCP standards.
“In our wines, all the dedication, rigor, and expertise are present, and it is this quality and consistency that allow us to produce wines with character.”
Jaime Quendera, Oenologist
