Manuel Moreira, tasting note published in April 11th 2024

Minimum aging: 10 years.
The Aguardente DOC Lourinhã is presented pure, with no addition of colorants, especially caramel to adjust the color. Its color, smoothness, and aromas come from the strict aging process.

Louriana XO

From the grape to the final bottled product, the Aguardente DOC Lourinhã is produced in the demarcated Lourinhã region, where the entire process—starting from the grape variety, the vineyard/soil, the vinification, distillation, aging, filtration, bottling, and labeling—is carried out.

Vinification:
Harvesting is determined by the maturation conditions of the grapes. The grapes produce a low-alcohol wine (10% vol.), rich in organic acids and without the addition of sulfur dioxide or any other enological products. The distillation is carried out through a continuous system in a copper column, reaching an alcohol degree between 74° and 77°.

Aging:
The quality of the spirit also depends on the environmental conditions where it ages. The aging must take place in low light, with no ventilation, and with high and constant relative humidity. The minimum aging period is 10 years. Aging is done exclusively in barrels made of Portuguese oak, French oak (Allier and Limousin), and chestnut wood, with a capacity of less than eight hundred liters and various toasting levels: light, medium, and strong.

With a small production, traditional methods are used, such as manual labeling. This ensures a unique product with excellent organoleptic characteristics.

Adega Cooperativa da Lourinhã

The Lourinhã Cooperative Winery (ACL), founded in 1957, was initially focused on the production of red and white wines. Years later, after pioneering in the production of light wines, it also started producing spirits.

With more than three thousand members over the years, it currently has around twenty members who still produce almost exclusively for the ACL. In recent years, the average annual production has been 170 tons of grapes, which, after being vinified and distilled, results in about 17,000 liters of grape spirit.

Lourinhã is located in the West region, about sixty-five kilometers from Lisbon, and lies approximately at the center of the Portuguese coastline. A large part of its agricultural area is used to cultivate pumpkins, orchards, and vineyards. The average annual temperature is sixteen degrees, benefiting from both an oceanic and Mediterranean climate.

The vineyards cultivated in this region mainly consist of white grape varieties. Due to their exposure and soils, the grapes allow for the production of low-alcohol, high-acid wine, from which a high-quality spirit is distilled. Due to this exceptional quality, this spirit was used by Port wine producers around 210 years ago.

The Lourinhã region has long been associated with viticulture, as evidenced by the Foral letter given by D. Jordão, with the approval of King D. Afonso Henriques. This area is also mentioned in various documents related to the history of Portuguese viticulture.

On March 7, 1992, the dedication and work of many, along with the high quality of the spirit, was recognized with the publication of Decree-Law No. 34/92, establishing the Demarcated Region of Quality Grape Spirit with Controlled Designation of Origin “Lourinhã” (1), the first and only demarcated region in the country solely for the production of spirits. It is one of three regions in Europe, alongside the famous French spirits, Armagnac and Cognac.
