Quinta de Carapeços

Located in the Vinho Verde Region, more precisely in the municipality of Amarante – land of Pascoaes and Souza Cardoso, the Quinta de Carapeços is known for its natural beauty, as well as for the quality and uniqueness of its white, red, rosé, sparkling and late harvest wines, which over the years have won numerous prizes and gained recognition by critics and wine lovers.
This Quinta combines tradition and modernity, always with respect for what nature has to offer and also for a great maxim: no two harvests are the same.
The first reference to the Carapeços Estate dates back to 1338, the year in which a daughter of Martim Carvalho, Knight of Basto, married João de Carapeços, so called because he was the Lord of the Estate with the same name.
In 1351, the property was sold and, already in the beginning of the 17th century, it belonged to the Monastery of São Salvador de Travanca, which was founded in the middle of the 12th century by Benedictine monks.
With the extinction of the Religious Orders in 1834, the farm was sold, and the previous owner was a descendant of the mentioned Martim Carvalho.
A lawyer by profession, Miguel Pereira de Abreu always had an enormous passion for the world of wine, the result of his family’s ancestral connection to agricultural properties situated in the municipalities of Amarante, Felgueiras and Penafiel.
Responding to the enormous transformations that have taken place in the rural world since the 60’s and 70’s of the last century, he carried out a profound reformulation of the exploitation of his land, focusing initially on the production of top quality grapes.
To do so, it reconverted the whole of the agricultural area, through the creation of
platforms for planting vines in bardo (thus replacing the traditional ramadas) and introducing grape varieties better adapted to the conditions of the terroir.
He was a pioneer in the introduction of the Alvarinho grape variety outside the Melgaço-Monção sub-region.
At the beginning of this century, after the installation of a winery equipped with the most up to date technology available, the brand “QUINTA de CARAPEÇOS” is launched in the market, followed more recently by the brand “EIRA dos MOUROS”, this one associated to an entry level line.
The Quinta produces White, Rosé, Red, Sparkling and Late Harvest wines of the highest quality which over the years have earned the award of numerous Prizes at national and international level.
