James Suckling, tasting note published in August 10th 2021

Very ripe red with plums, figs, dark chocolate, walnuts and cloves. Full-bodied with round, layered tannins that show maturity and intensity. Fruit forward, but formed and powerful. Plush and high-toned. Tasty finish. From 3.8 hectares of vineyard. It is a blend of tempranillo, graciano, garnacha, granegro and rojal. Shows the ripeness of the vintage with structure and freshness. Crazy wine. First bottling of this remarkable wine.

Yjar

A passion project of legendary Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodríguez from iconic Rioja producer Remelluri, Yjar welcomes a promising future as a wine that could be a true icon of this exalted region.
Yjar has a distinguished history dating back to the 1400s. The vineyards are located in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño, where some of the highest altitude vineyards are planted at an impressive altitude of 600-800 metres above sea level. The estate was originally a sanctuary run by Hieronymite monks in the 1400s. They tended the land for several years, but eventually abandoned the property. It was subsequently acquired by the Divisia de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Toloño, a cooperative of sorts that managed the vineyards and estate for five centuries. The property was again abandoned in the 19th century after a fire at the monastery, and remained uninhabited until the 1960s. Eventually, it was bought by a Basque family who spent 50 years rehabilitating the vineyards and the estate. Telmo Rodríguez became interested in the 3.8-hectare property about ten years ago, and it was then that Yjar’s trajectory began to shift in an exciting direction.

Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri

Remelluri – to use its short name – is a family-run winery near Labastida, in the Alavesa area of Rioja. It is known, in particular, for its red wines based on the Tempranillo grape variety.
The estate was founded by monks in the 14th century. However, several pieces of evidence point to wine production at the site from much earlier. The vineyards changed ownership frequently before being bought by Jaime Rodríguez in 1967. In 2010, his children, Amaia and Telmo Rodríguez (well known for their own wine labels), took over.
They reduced production by a third, focusing entirely on the estate’s fruit for the main label. Garnacha is making the transition to traditional bush vines. The introduction of mixed variety vineyards is also planned. Although the estate has always avoided chemical inputs, organic certification was obtained in 2010.
In the winery, each plot is fermented separately using native yeasts. Little new oak is used, the wines are bottled after light filtration and fining.
The red wines grown on the estate are a Reserva and a Gran Reserva. The former is made mainly with Tempranillo. Smaller components of Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano, and the white varieties Viura, Moscato and Malvasia may feature. It ages for about 16 months in French oak barrels and in total spends at least three years in the cellar.
Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva is a blend of the best fruit and has great ageing potential. The blend is similar to Reserva. Granja Remelluri spends 26 months in French oak barrels and is released after a minimum of six years. Remelluri Blanco is a blend of up to nine different grape varieties. It is fermented in a mixture of barrels, large wooden vats and concrete tanks. After 12 months of maturation in the same vessels, it is blended. It then spends another eight months in vats.
Fruit from established producers in nearby villages now goes into two wines sold under the Las Lindes de Remelluri label. Each is named after the village in question; Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
The vinification for these is essentially the same with both spending 10 months in French oak barrels. This allows the location to come into the limelight. The Labastida vineyards are situated at a higher altitude. The wine is therefore higher in acidity and lower in alcohol than that of San Vicente.
