From steeper slopes, the 2016 Gigondas Arcane L'Hermite is composed of 80% Grenache, 7% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, Muscardin, and Picpoul Noir that was aged in a submerged barrel. It's another fine wine from Xavier Vignon that has loads of blackberries, spice, dried herbs from Provence, and clay soil. It is elegant, seamless and silky, with a beautiful purity and elegance. It will benefit from short cellaring and keep for a decade.
2016 was a wonderful vintage in Gigondas, especially in the high altitude sites where the sun levels were ideal for producing small yields of perfectly concentrated juice. Small barrels of the blend (80% Grenache; 7% Mourvèdre; 5% Syrah; 4% Muscardin; 4% Picpoul Noir) from these specially selected plots were then placed in Gigondas’ large concrete tanks, ensuring that the Grenache in particular maintains the absolute purity of the fruit. Unconventional, perhaps; exciting and with magnificent results, definitely.
