Vinha da Urze
On the cliffs of the Ribeira de Aguiar, facing the crags where an ancient Roman quarry is located and where the golden eagle still nests today, lies the Quinta da Urze, the headquarters of the agricultural estate that includes nearby properties, totaling 190 hectares, all on schist soils with similar characteristics.
The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of 320 meters, and their east-facing exposure protects them from the region’s climatic extremes, allowing for the production of grapes that give rise to aromatic, fresh, and elegant wines.
In total, about 14 hectares are planted with Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Amarela, and a small field of selected clones of the most important international grape varieties.
In the old estate house is one of the former CARM wineries, with its stone vats, wooden presses, and channels carved into the rock, through which the wines would flow by gravity into large barrels where the fortification of the must took place; the Port wines produced there were then transported by ox-drawn carts to the Douro River, where they were transferred to rabelo boats for transport to Gaia.
