Vieux Château Mazerat
Vieux Château Mazerat is our most recent acquisition, and we are very proud to own it. In 1996, we bought the vineyard that is now Le Dôme from Vieux Château Mazerat, so the opportunity to acquire the mother-vineyard twelve years later was a great achievement. This is why the label of Vieux Château Mazerat is the reverse of Le Dôme’s – Ying and Yang.
Viticulture: Vieux Château Mazerat is surrounded by Château Canon on three sides and by Château Angelus to the west. The vineyard is located in the heart of “Cru Classé” territory and faces Château Beauséjour Duffau Lagarosse. The vineyard, covering 4.15 ha and planted between 1947 and 1962, is a mix of 35% very old Cabernet Franc vines and 65% Merlot, on clay over limestone soils.
The vineyard yield is limited to 30 hectolitres per hectare, with the vines pruned using the double guyot system. Secondary shoots are removed, and two green harvests are carried out to ensure no more than four bunches of grapes per vine during the véraison stage. The grapes are handpicked into small trays before being transferred to the winery.
Vinification: Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are sorted – first by bunch, then, after destemming, grape by grape. Only conveyors are used to transport the grapes, and the wine is fermented in wooden vats after cold maceration. The wines undergo malolactic fermentation in new French oak and are barrel-aged in a temperature-controlled cellar at 14°C.
Something Unusual: David Peppercorn, in his 1980 book Bordeaux, stated that if the then-owner were to buy some oak barrels, there would be no reason why Vieux Château Mazerat shouldn’t be a Cru Classé like all of its neighbors. We bought the oak barrels.
