O Produtor, tasting note published in November 3rd 2022

Its color is bright with some concentration. The Vertente manages to capture the profile of the Douro in a bottle. This is because it originates from all types of Douro grape varieties, from terraced vineyards, high-altitude vineyards with different orientations. On the nose, there are notes of wild fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, nuances of graphite, spices, and balsamic. On the palate, it is structured and elegant, finishing long and persistent.

Vertente

The Vertente is an appealing wine, on the path of elegance and complexity, marrying the fruit and concentration of Douro wines with the freshness and elegance of Niepoort wines. The grapes come from Quinta de Nápoles, a vineyard of about 30 years in the Tedo Valley, and from old vines near Pinhão, aged 50 to 80 years.

The 2020 viticultural year was characterized by its heterogeneity. A rainy winter, followed by a very moderate spring, allowed the vine to develop well, ending with a quite cool June, delaying vegetative development. July was austere, the hottest since 1931, with three heatwave periods, causing losses in the vineyards.

Harvest began in the first weeks of August in the hottest areas and ended in the higher elevations at the end of September. After a selection in the vineyard, a second selection was made on the sorting table. The Vertente 2020 was vinified in conical stainless steel tanks. The wine aged for 22 months in French oak barrels.

The Vertente combines power and elegance, contributing to good aging potential. Pairing suggestions: white meats (turkey, chicken), grilled dishes, fatty fish (salmon, grouper). Vegetarian suggestions: pasta and quiches.

Niepoort Vinhos

The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. The first property in Douro was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new Era in the company with the creation of the first Redoma red in 1991. In the last years Niepoort took on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and acquired two properties in other regions, Dão and Bairrada. Discover the Niepoort Triangle which express the different terroirs: Schist (Douro), Limestone (Bairrada) and Granite (Dão).
