Vertente
The Vertente, as the name suggests, is a way of seeing the Douro. The grapes come from various terroirs of the Douro where we work, mostly from old vines ranging from 50 to 80 years old, with the traditional blend of grape varieties.
The year 2017 is classified as a hot year, the second hottest year since 1931, with precipitation values much lower than normal, resulting in high evapotranspiration and significant soil moisture deficit, also classifying it as extremely dry, ranking among the 4 driest years since 1931.
Niepoort’s philosophy of working with old vines has proven to be wise, as they are less susceptible to different climatic conditions, achieving a better balance by delving deeper into the soil for water reserves.
The grapes showed great quality and health, with very firm and crunchy skins and mature seeds. Harvest took place between August 10 and September 10, making it the earliest harvest in Niepoort’s history. Harvesting early allowed us to obtain grapes with a naturally balanced acidity to produce fresh, elegant, and precise wines. Aged for 22 months in French oak barrels.
