Man plays an essential role in the creation of wines. It all begins with human hands, planting the vine, caring for it, and harvesting the succulent grapes it produces. Handcrafted wines are masterfully blended, combining the contents of different barrels to create the final batch. The careful selection and combination of flavors and notes result in the final wine.
Crafted by Hand, VZ Douro Red is produced from grapes sourced from various vineyards. The main vineyard is located in Valença do Douro, at 450 meters of altitude, planted with over 20 grape varieties. The other vineyards are situated in the Torto River Valley and above Pinhão, in Casal de Loivos, also with mixed grape varieties. It is estimated that there are about 30 different grape varieties in this wine.
Winemaking:
All grapes are foot-trodden in traditional lagares for 1 to 3 days before fermentation. They then ferment in stainless steel tanks for 7 to 10 days at temperatures ranging from 22°C to 27°C, with manual remontage. The resulting wine is transferred to 225-liter French oak barrels, one and two years old, from different cooperages, where malolactic fermentation takes place.
The wine aged for 26 months in barrels, with all fermentations kept separate until the final blend. It was then stabilized in stainless steel tanks for two months before bottling.
