Quinta do Espinhal de Baixo, with an area of 35 acres, has belonged to the family of José Carlos Agrellos since 1991, and is situated on the right hand bank of the Douro river, next to Ferrão railway station, between Peso da Régua and Pinhão.
The quinta enjoys all of the perfect characteristics for the production of very high quality grapes. The vines are mainly south facing, planted in terraces and organised by variety. Traditional vines have been kept, with about 10 Acres of old vines being maintained. The principal varieties are Touriga Nacionaland Tinta Roriz, as well as Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão. The soil is all of class A standard., the highest attributable grade within the demarcated region of the Douro.
From these grapes the Agrellos family resolved to produce the highest quality wine, under the brand name of MARKA, as a tribute to MARjorie KAthleen Durham Agrellos, who was a staunch supporter of this project. At the same time, the family_x0092_s love of music is reflected in the firm_x0092_s logo, derived from the treble clef.
So began the Durham-Agrellos project, with the simultaneous launch of both the Marka Reserve red 2002 and the Colheita 2003, both of which were very well critically received. The colheita wines have been produced annually right up to 2008, the 2005 wine being bottled as MARKA Classic Blend. The first white wine was produced in 2008.
