Torre do Frade

From the vineyards located in the Monforte, Portalegre region, comes this Petit Virgo, perfect to pair with grilled meats, duck rice, skewers, Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá, pizzas, and pasta, should be served at 15º and consumed at 18º.

Harvest: Manual.

Aging: Full stainless steel aging for 6 months before bottling.

After bottling, the bottles age in a 17th-century French-built tunnel, carved into the stone, which is unique in Alentejo. This tunnel is about 100 meters long and maintains a variable temperature between 14°/18° degrees and humidity between 60% and 90% throughout the year, all without air conditioning. The aging cellar has 17th-century Italian architecture (Tuscany style), a building built under the orders of French counts.

Sociedade Agrícola da Herdade da Torre de Curvo, Lda.

The Torre do Frade is a family-owned agricultural estate located in the municipality of Monforte in the heart of Alto Alentejo, southeast Portugal, very close to the border with the Spanish Extremadura.

The history of the estate dates back to the distant year of 1384 when the original owner donated the land to the Hermits of the Order of St. Augustine. The friars founded a convent that thrived until 1834 when religious orders were expelled from Portugal by Joaquim António de Aguiar, Minister of Ecclesiastical and Justice Affairs at the time.

With the expulsion of the friars, the lands were sold at public auction and bought by the family in 1839. Currently, the management is handled by three branches of the original family.

The estate produces Carnalentejana-labeled cattle, certified cereals for human consumption, honey, cork, black pork, grapes of superior quality, and, since 2004, the family’s first wine.

The aging cellar is the highlight of this producer. After bottling, the bottles age in a 17th-century French-built tunnel, carved in stone, which is unique in Alentejo. This tunnel is about 100 meters long and maintains a temperature ranging between 14°/18° degrees and humidity between 60% to 90% throughout the year, all without air conditioning.

The aging cellar has Italian 17th-century architecture (Tuscan style), a building erected on the orders of French counts. The architecture of Monte da Torre do Frade is typically Alentejo.
