O Produtor, tasting note published in August 28th 2024

Light ruby color. The nose is dominated by wild berries, fresh strawberries, and tomato leaf, complemented by a subtle vanilla touch from the barrels and volcanic notes. The palate is very elegant, with smooth tannins and a medium body. The finish is highly pleasant, persistent, and saline. Born from lava-rich soils, abundant in mineral nutrients, Terras de Lava red wine carries the Azores Geographical Indication (IG) and genuinely expresses its volcanic terroir.

Terroir Vulcânico

The Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico was founded in 1949, when local producers united to recover noble grape varieties and the traditional vine cultivation in stone-walled enclosures, now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over the years, more members have joined this cause, bringing the total to 250, including women, men, and families who dedicate their lives to their passion and an ancient craft. With 75 years of history, it is the oldest wine producer in the Azores, continuing to respect and preserve the region’s winemaking traditions. This alliance ensures the quality of wines created in the unique Azorean soils.

Winemaking: After careful selection, grapes from different varieties are vinified separately. Fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature of 22°C, in contact with the grape skins for optimal color and aroma extraction. The wine was partially aged in used French oak barrels, with the final blend assembled only at the end of the aging process.

Winemaker: Bernardo Cabral.

Pico Wines

Our story is written in sweat, blood and tears. From our ancestors to the winegrowers of today. They are our people, our associates, our producers, our traditions, our techniques… a generational knowledge that makes us so unique and original. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and North America, the Azores, composed of 9 islands, develop in the parallel of Lisbon with the latitudes of 39”43’/36”55’N. Pico Island is the second largest and most central of the archipelago. Viticulture has been present here for many generations.
