Antonio Galloni, tasting note published in September 12th 2021
Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a pretty powerful wine in 2018. Once again, Sonoma Coast Pinot outdoes itself, in 2018 even more than usual. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, liquorice and menthol contribute to a real sense of gravitas. This serious, dense Pinot is nothing but a light blackout, and shows how tremendously appealing the vintage is, even among top-level wines.
Rivers Marie is a passionate project owned and run by husband and wife team Thomas Rivers Brown and wife Genevieve Marie Welsh growing up in Sonoma. The project was founded in 2002, producing absolutely minuscule amounts of wine from the Summa vineyard. Brown was already one of the most sought-after consulting winemakers in Napa, making extraordinary Cabernet, but wanted to make wines inspired by Burgundy and Barolo. Today, Rivers-Marie produces Pinot and Chardonnay (and some Cabernet) from coastal sites throughout the Occidental, as well as Summa. The wines have a Burgundian slant in style – but are very representative of the Sonoma Coast – and are some of the best examples of Sonoma Pinot you’ll find.

Rivers-Marie
Since 2002, Rivers-Marie has been quietly producing limited production wines, including Pinot Noir; its first vintage was from the Summa vineyard on dead-end Taylor Lane near the town of Occidental in neighboring Sonoma County. This vineyard produced California’s first 100-point Pinot Noir in 1991, when it was a vineyard named for Williams Selyem. Today, the vineyard is owned by Rivers-Marie. They later added Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to their portfolio.
