Casa Ferreirinha
The Reserva Especial red wine is announced only in extraordinary years. Rare and unique, it allows you to taste the best the Douro has to offer. Created in 1960 by Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the Reserva Especial has only 18 editions, each one revealing a distinct profile, but always with a common identity: the Douro Superior.
The 2014 Reserva Especial is the most recent example of this great harvest, born under the supervision of Luís Sottomayor, Sogrape’s oenology director in the Douro. According to Sottomayor, “It is a wine that stands out for its elegance, the result of a temperate year with good maturation, and also for its excellent volume, lively acidity, firm tannins, and an extremely long and complex finish.”
Vinified at Quinta da Leda in Almendra, the predominant blend is made from selected grapes from the estate, which currently has about 170 hectares of vines. The intense aroma reveals notes of spices, truffles, sous-bois, black fruits, a stony touch, and some cocoa. “Reserva Especial 2014 is one to remember,” concludes Sottomayor.
This iconic wine expresses the perfect combination of time and place, enhancing the prestige of Casa Ferreirinha, a pioneer and leader in the Douro’s non-fortified wines, with over 250 years of history.
The Douro region, famous for Port wine, is also recognized for its still wines. With 250,000 hectares of rugged topography, 44,000 hectares of vineyards, and over 110 grape varieties, the region withstands the climatic challenges of harsh winters and hot summers, with terraced schist soils shaped by humans.
