O Produtor, tasting note published in July 13th 1905
It is a red wine with an incredibly deep colour. There are shades of deep violet, purple and dark red. This wine is made from a 100 year old vineyard which gives rise to a concentrated wine, full of ripe red fruit aromas, with a high complexity and elegance that only such a vineyard can create. There is a certain ripe attitude to this wine that shows aromas of raspberries, plums and black cherries combined with fresh notes of rockrose, none of these flavours are too obvious and too open, but come through with an understated elegance as the wine oozes. the palate and evolves in the glass.
Quinta Vale D. Maria “Vinha do Rio” grapes are foot trodden and fully fermented in lagares for 7 to 10 days at temperatures ranging from 22° to 27° Celsius. The resulting wines are then transferred to new Allier French oak barrels of 225 litres from various cooperages, namely François Frères and Taransaud, where they undergo malolactic fermentation. The final choice of barrels and blending took place between May and June of the second year after harvest. The wine is normally bottled two to three weeks after blending.

Quinta Vale D. Maria is a very old property in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region. A small but dedicated team of winemakers and winemakers – Sandra Tavares da Silva, Joana Pinhão and Cristiano van Zeller – try to ensure that each of the Port or Douro DOC wines represents the best that the Region has to offer. The efforts try to be characterized by innovation and differentiation. The aim is that the wines reflect personality, character, pleasure, fun, being directed towards people and the pleasure of life.
