Quinta do Vallado
The Vallado Vinha da Granja comes from a single plot of very old vineyard called “Vinha da Granja.” This vineyard was planted in 1929, with a south-facing exposure, and it has a blend of 32 grape varieties (field blend), of which the predominant ones are: Tinta Roriz (19%), Tinta Amarela (19%), Touriga Franca (18%), Touriga Nacional(8%), and Moreto (7%).
The soil is predominantly schistous. The production from these vineyards, which have a planting density of 7,000 plants per hectare, averages 400 grams per plant, equivalent to 2,800 kg per hectare. These vineyards are among the lowest yielding vineyards per hectare worldwide.
Vinification: The grapes, after careful manual selection on the sorting table, are completely destemmed and ferment for 10 days in oak vats, with temperature control and mechanical pumping over by robot.
Aging: This wine aged 80% in new 225-liter French oak barrels and 20% in second-year barrels for 20 months.
