Quinta do Ribeirinho
Man has dreams. Luís Pato’s dream was to create a wine that would reveal to us what wines were like before the arrival of phylloxera in Europe. Thus was born PÉ FRANCO, as it is commonly known. To achieve this, he planted 1.2 hectares of BAGA vines, as was the custom in pre-phylloxera Europe, directly in sandy soil – a way to avoid the root attack by the insect carrier of the disease, given its aversion (fortunately) to this type of soil. After much anxiety, the first harvest took place in 1995, 7 years after planting.
The wine now comes from an expanded area of 2.5 hectares. Since each vine produces only one cluster, i.e., one glass of wine, the annual work of six rows of vines is needed to obtain a bottle. This is due not only to the lower production of the non-grafted vine but also to the successive pruning we perform in order to obtain a very full-bodied wine, capable of hiding the tannins of the grape and the characteristic acidity of the region’s climate. These are fundamental factors to give it an aging capacity that exceeds two decades, making it an excellent wine to celebrate coming of age, marriage, or another significant event for the son or daughter, with a wine from the year of their birth.
