O Produtor, tasting note published in September 9th 2014

Colour: Opaque, with deep purple hints. Aroma: Intense on the nose, displaying fresh wild berry fruit aromas and elegant notes of fine spices. The nose is seductive, engaging and complex. Palate: Elegant start, leading to a voluptuous wine with a tight-knit structure. The fresh and finely-textured tannins are well-integrated with retronasal notes of wild berry fruit. This is a harmonious wine, with a perfectly balanced and lingering finish.

Quinta do Crasto

For some wine enthusiasts and critics, Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte is one of this estate’s best wines, one of the best, in fact, in the entire Douro region. Like its sister wine, Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa, Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte takes its name from a centenary plot of vines. It is only bottled in years of exceptional quality that yield lively and deep coloured wines. Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte is a super premium, single vineyard Douro DOC red wine. It is released in highly limited quantities, due to the low yield of the old vines, especially those over a hundred years of age. Rarely are more than 4,000 bottles produced. Winemaking: The grapes, coming from Vinha da Ponte, a plot of Quinta do Crasto´s vineyard, were taken to the winery in plastic boxes and rigorously inspected on arrival. The grapes were first foot trodden in a traditional stone tank (“lagar”) and after this, they were transferred into an open stainless steel tank with robotic pistons. Fermentation took place for 7 days under strict controlled temperature environment.
Ageing: 20 months in new French oak barrels (225 litres).

Quinta do Crasto

The first known references to Quinta do Crasto can be traced back to 1615, long before the Douro Valley became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. The property is a historic one and is recorded as having been awarded “feitoria” status (the highest vineyard classification of the time) in 1761. The original demarcation was marked with a series of granite markers. One of these markers, called “marco pombalino”, dating back to 1758, is still visible at the Quinta.

In the early 1900s, Quinta do Crasto was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, founder of the famous Constantino Port house. Following his death in 1923, his son, Fernando de Almeida, continued to run the Quinta, producing stellar Port wines.

In 1981, Fernando de Almeida’s daughter, Leonor Roquette, and her husband, Jorge Roquette, assumed majority ownership and management of the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomás, they began the process of remodelling and expanding the vineyards and facilities to enable the production of top quality Port and Douro wines. Quinta do Crasto has now reclaimed its rightful status as one of the great family estates of the Douro region.
