O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2019

It has a loaded violet color. On the nose, it impresses for its intensity and concentration of red fruit aromas in perfect harmony with soft floral notes. In the mouth it presents an intense beginning, evolving to a wine with an elegant profile, with excellent volume in the mouth and tannins of silky texture, everything very well integrated with notes of red fruits. It ends in perfect balance, with an extraordinary persistence and full of freshness. A wine that perfectly reflects the identity of the grape variety.

Quinta do Crasto

A single-varietal wine from the premium range, bottled only in years when the harvest reaches a high level of quality and excellence, showcasing the true potential of the grape variety.

Touriga Franca is a challenging grape because it only expresses its true potential when it reaches perfect phenolic ripeness. Therefore, Quinta do Crasto Touriga Franca is a late-maturing wine, meaning the grapes of this variety require a significant amount of time to achieve correct and perfect ripeness.

Vinification: Grapes from the finest Touriga Franca plots at Quinta do Crasto were transported in 22 kg capacity crates and subjected to rigorous sorting upon entering the winery. After total destemming and slight crushing, the must was transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation tanks. At the end of alcoholic fermentation, a gentle pressing was carried out.

Quinta do Crasto Touriga Franca 2016 matured in French oak barrels for 18 months.

Quinta do Crasto

The first known references to Quinta do Crasto can be traced back to 1615, long before the Douro Valley became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. The property is a historic one and is recorded as having been awarded “feitoria” status (the highest vineyard classification of the time) in 1761. The original demarcation was marked with a series of granite markers. One of these markers, called “marco pombalino”, dating back to 1758, is still visible at the Quinta.

In the early 1900s, Quinta do Crasto was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, founder of the famous Constantino Port house. Following his death in 1923, his son, Fernando de Almeida, continued to run the Quinta, producing stellar Port wines.

In 1981, Fernando de Almeida’s daughter, Leonor Roquette, and her husband, Jorge Roquette, assumed majority ownership and management of the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomás, they began the process of remodelling and expanding the vineyards and facilities to enable the production of top quality Port and Douro wines. Quinta do Crasto has now reclaimed its rightful status as one of the great family estates of the Douro region.
