O Produtor, tasting note published in January 27th 2021

With a deep ruby color, it shows excellent aromatic intensity, featuring soft notes of cocoa, rockrose, and fresh wild berries. It begins captivatingly on the palate, evolving into a wine of excellent volume, structure, and solidity, with tannins of outstanding tension and quality. A wine full of personality that finishes fresh and with excellent persistence.

Quinta do Crasto

The Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz is a premium range wine produced with 100% Tinta Roriz grapes and is only bottled in years when a high level of quality and excellence is achieved, and when the variety shows its full potential.

Over the years, Quinta do Crasto has identified three ideal vineyard plots for this variety with three different sun exposures – east, east-south, and west-north – at the same altitude, and with soil that, although poor on the surface, presents a layer of clay at a depth of one and a half meters that retains winter water, thus providing the necessary water conditions for excellent vine performance.

The year 2018 allowed for excellence in freshness and balance in white wines, red wines with excellent concentration, structure, freshness, and aromatic definition, and Port wines with excellent aging potential.

Vinification: The grapes, from the best Tinta Roriz plots at Quinta do Crasto, were transported in 22kg capacity boxes and subjected to rigorous selection upon arrival at the winery. After total destemming and slight crushing, the must was transferred to stainless steel fermentation tanks with controlled temperature. At the end of alcoholic fermentation, a gentle pressing was carried out.

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.

Winemaker: Manuel Lobo.

Quinta do Crasto

The first known references to Quinta do Crasto can be traced back to 1615, long before the Douro Valley became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. The property is a historic one and is recorded as having been awarded “feitoria” status (the highest vineyard classification of the time) in 1761. The original demarcation was marked with a series of granite markers. One of these markers, called “marco pombalino”, dating back to 1758, is still visible at the Quinta.

In the early 1900s, Quinta do Crasto was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, founder of the famous Constantino Port house. Following his death in 1923, his son, Fernando de Almeida, continued to run the Quinta, producing stellar Port wines.

In 1981, Fernando de Almeida’s daughter, Leonor Roquette, and her husband, Jorge Roquette, assumed majority ownership and management of the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomás, they began the process of remodelling and expanding the vineyards and facilities to enable the production of top quality Port and Douro wines. Quinta do Crasto has now reclaimed its rightful status as one of the great family estates of the Douro region.
