O Produtor, tasting note published in July 30th 2023

Deep red color with violet hues. Displays an intense, fresh, and complex aromatic profile, with notes of wild berries in perfect harmony with fresh woodland and spice notes. On the palate, it begins very balanced and elegant, evolving into a wine with powerful yet silky tannins that provide a rich, velvety texture. A serious wine that captures the uniqueness and identity of Douro Superior, ending long and elegant.

Quinta do Crasto

As the name suggests, Crasto Superior Tinto is made from grapes sourced from the Douro Superior region, at Quinta da Cabreira, located near Castelo Melhor.

2021 will certainly be remembered as a year full of freshness and elegance. It was a year of unpredictable weather, presenting many challenges in both the vineyard and the winery, where careful planning, regular monitoring, and adaptability were essential to achieve excellence. This vintage will be memorable for producing full-bodied wines with excellent freshness, very fine aromas, and silky-textured tannins. A truly elegant year that will yield wines with outstanding potential for bottle aging.

Vinification: The grapes from our Quinta da Cabreira in Douro Superior were transported in food-grade plastic crates and carefully sorted upon arrival at the winery. After complete destemming and gentle crushing, the must was transferred to stainless steel fermentation tanks with temperature control.

Aging: Crasto Superior Tinto aged in French oak barrels for approximately 12 months.

Quinta do Crasto

The first known references to Quinta do Crasto can be traced back to 1615, long before the Douro Valley became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. The property is a historic one and is recorded as having been awarded “feitoria” status (the highest vineyard classification of the time) in 1761. The original demarcation was marked with a series of granite markers. One of these markers, called “marco pombalino”, dating back to 1758, is still visible at the Quinta.

In the early 1900s, Quinta do Crasto was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, founder of the famous Constantino Port house. Following his death in 1923, his son, Fernando de Almeida, continued to run the Quinta, producing stellar Port wines.

In 1981, Fernando de Almeida’s daughter, Leonor Roquette, and her husband, Jorge Roquette, assumed majority ownership and management of the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomás, they began the process of remodelling and expanding the vineyards and facilities to enable the production of top quality Port and Douro wines. Quinta do Crasto has now reclaimed its rightful status as one of the great family estates of the Douro region.
